Located in the Aube, the southern portion of the Champagne region, in the almost comically pretty village of Gyé-sur-Seine, Thomas Barbichon has quietly been turning out tiny quantities of brilliant wine from his own organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards. He's a Pinot Noir specialist, and indeed this Blanc de Noirs is almost entirely Pinot Noir, with just a touch of Pinot Meunier to round it out. Much of the most exciting Champagne in recent years has been coming from this subregion: the soil has more in common with that of Chablis (just another hour down the road) than with the more classically famous northern reaches of Champagne between Reims and Epernay, and the sun is just that little bit warmer here. Thomas's wines a maintain and sleek and crunchy minerality while developing a real generosity and comlexity of fruit, paired with the toastiness from a few years on the lees. -- James
